925 Sterling Silver

Sterling silver is an alloy consisting of 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper. The copper is added to give the soft, pure metal the strength it needs to be used for jewellery. The copper also reduces tarnishing, making it an excellent material for body jewellery. Sterling silver is recommended for well-established earlobe piercings and short-term wear. The tarnish it commonly generates through contact with the skin and the air, i.e., oxidisation, makes it unsuitable for long term body piercing wear, but sterling silver is a wonderful material for non-pierced jewellery of all kinds.

Brass

Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc. The proportions of each metal vary to create a range of different types of brass, each with different properties. Rich low brass, also called Tombac, contains 15% zinc and is often used for jewellery. Brass containing 75% copper and 25% zinc is a beautiful yellow colour, often used as imitation gold. A jewellery industry standard for more than 100 years, brass doesn’t rust and is commonly used for decorative stamps and jewellery findings.

Austrian Crystal

Austrian crystal, AKA rhinestone, is man-made, involving the creative cutting of hand-blown glass with a 32% lead content. It can also be made from rock crystal or acrylic. The best quality lead glass Austrian crystal is machine cut for precision then polished to an incredibly bright shine, and the most famous manufacturer is Swarovski. In body jewellery, many crystal items are given a tough, invisible epoxy coating to keep the gems safe and retain their sparkle.

Crystal Glass

Crystal glass jewellery is often made from Pyrex, Kimax or borosilicate glass, which are specially tempered to make them suitably safe for body jewellery. There are medical-grade, non-porous and lead-free versions too. In jewellery that uses colourful Millicane or Dichroic glass, the colours are sometimes created using metal alloys and other unsafe materials. The best quality jewellery made with these materials is protected by a layer of Pyrex or Kimax glass to keep your skin safe. We only use the best quality crystal glass in our jewellery collection.

Freshwater Pearls

Natural freshwater pearls occur in mussel shells, forming around impurities which irritate the creature, encouraging it to secrete pearl to cover it up. They are imperfect by nature, natural-looking with grooves, pits, dents, lumps and natural growth lines called love lines. Freshwater pearls come in all sorts of lovely colours, depending on the chemical composition of the water the animals live in, including white, cream, pink, red, copper, brown, lavender, purple, green, blue and yellow, and they traditionally symbolise purity, peace and protection.

Cubic Zirconia (CZ)

Cubic zirconia (also known as CZ) is similar to a diamond with its brilliance and crystal clarity, but it is a synthesized (man-made) crystalline material that is colorless, hard, and flawless. It looks so much like a diamond, it is an affordable alternative to diamonds. It can be made in different colors to simulate the different colors of a diamond. Cubic zirconia started being produced in 1976 because of its diamond-like qualities, low cost, and overall durability.
